Tarpey Teacher Motivates Readers
Kristene Scholefield, a fourth grade teacher at Tarpey Elementary was the guest writer today in the Fresno Bee. She wrote about how she got the “spark” back in her voice when talking about teaching after listening to several authors speak. She says:
“And as the author Avi said, “Whereas some people may see orchards and orange groves when they come to Fresno as tree experts, and car enthusiasts see all of the cars, even though they see the trees also, I come to Fresno and see the trees and cars, but I also see story, it’s how I look at things.” I would like my students to see story.”
She wrote about getting one of her fourth graders turned on to reading because he read a book by Avi entitled Don’t You Know There’s A War Going On . He wanted his own copy and was able to buy one because the Tarpey school library was having a book fair.
It is great to read about how kids become motivated to read by teachers and how the school library partners with teachers to light that fire of reading excitement for lots of kids!
